Wow, what a great weekend of cricket for the BBDCC Sharks on the 9th and 10th January!!!!
C grade has a great win down at Slab Road with Tim Polmear (66), MOB (49) and Captain Clydesdale (season high 27) the best of our batsmen helping the boys set 202. With Sam Kelly and Tim Polmear taking early wickets the Sharks were always on top until a late revival from Slab, however our boys held there nerve and secured the win by 15 runs. Best of the bowlers Sam Kelly (3 for 30- does this mean his now a all rounder?), TP also took 3 wickets. B Grade- In a game that was make or break for the Sharks B's season- Well where to start really? Bowling- not our best of the year with the Southern Tigers making the most of a very quick Sherburd Oval scoring 272. Pick of the bowlers were Wayne Quinn (3 wickets), Birthday boy Sean Wicks and the economical Marty Elliot (1 for 20 of 10 miserly overs) Our batting started well with the Sharks getting to 3 for 110, with Daniel Brokate unfortunately falling just 4 runs short of his maiden club 50, but hit an entertaining 46 which further proves the talent he has. However, surprise surprise.... the Sharks had a middle order collapse..... and the game seemed over at 8 for 163. Enter birthday boy Sean Wicks (23 not out), who joined the hard and big hitting Marty Elliott and the two combined for a match winning partnership. Marty finishing on 135 not (11 sixes and 10 fours). An amazing innings and what would have been something truly special to witness. Great work Marty, lets hope that form continues!!
B grade are now a legitimate contender and with a few more playing starting to join the Sharks adding to our depth and the rumour of a few ex Sharks returning we could be a serious threat....
A Grade- had a very good 5 wicket win against the dangerous Longley. The day could not have started better for the sharks when Damien "Pants' Minehan had one of Longleys two English imports caught very well low down at first slip by Jon Duggan off the very first ball of the day! Red hot opening bowler Steve O'Brien snared 2 wickets in his opening spell as did the under bowled Damien Minehan to have Longley 4 for 54 off the first 20 overs. Unfortunately a drop chance a few near misses cost the Sharks dearly through out the remainder of the innings with the Longley middle order showing some great composure helping there side to set a challenging 203 for victory. Special mention to Nathan Walton who bowled 10 straight overs through the middle overs and returned the very economical figures of 1 for 30 and was unlucky not to add a few more wickets.
The Sharks were in a very solid position at the first drinks break 2 for 65 off 17 overs, with Alex White looking very solid. The next 15 overs didnt quite go as planned for the sharks losing Luke Barlow (1), Alex White for a fluent 45 and Brad Goodwin run out for 7. The Sharks were now in a precarious predicament at 5 for 124 with 18 overs remaining.
However who would have doubted the two skinny men?? The Chemist that cares Steve Morgan (24 not out) and the red hot Steve O'Brien (did he sleep though Christmas?) making a controlled, gritty, determined innings of 71 not out which included several glorious drives for 4. This excellent partnership saw the Sharks home with 3 and a half overs to spare.

Sharks Lose Nail-Biters
Round 18 saw A Grade have a bye and both B and C Grade lose tight run chases.
B Grade were at home against Slab Road and fielded first. The old warhorse Ben Harrison, in his last game for the club snared the first 2 wickets before the 3rd wicket partnership took the score to 99. The introduction of Russell ‘Subway’ Timsar then saw the wickets tumble and the Sharks were on top at 6-130. Timsar snared his first 5 wicket haul for the club and the game was evenly poised at 9-183 before the 10th wicket added and unbeaten 53 to take the ascendancy. |

CONGRATULATIONS TO MICHAEL KNIGHT AND CHRIS HEVEY - JOINT WINNERS OF THE 2008-2009 ALLAN BATCHELOR MEDAL..... |
Convincing Win for A Grade
Round 17 saw A Grade score a resounding win, B Grade outclassed and C Grade secure a hard fought victory.
A Grade travelled down to Margate and opening bowlers Damien Minehan and Steven O’Brien soon saw the home teams batsmen heading back to the pavilion with regularity. Minehan captured 4 and O’Brien 3 , before Luke Barlow and Paul Johnstone combined to take the final 3 wickets. Margate were dismissed for 67.
Openers Minehan and Chris Hevey then easily knocked off the runs in 50 balls. Hevey finished unbeaten on 40 and Minehan 30.
B Grade were away to the Kingston Crows and were well on top when the home side found themselves 4-25 with Ben Harrison and Andrew Williams bowling fine opening spells. At 5-52 Crows and then 6-106, the Sharks were still on top before the Crows lower order combined to take the game away from the visitors. Sensible batting and controlled aggression saw the home side reach an imposing 9-271.
In reply, the Sharks were never in the hunt and regularly lost wickets. It was only a 10th wicket stand of 34 between John Cooper and Wayne Quinn that saw the total pass 100. The B Graders were finally bowled out for 110.
C Grade were in the field first and Sammy Strong snared an early wicket, before Sean Wicks got the next 2 to have the Roadies 3-50. Some sloppy fielding saw Slab momentarily gain the ascendancy before captain Marty Rainbird captured 2 quick wickets. Regular wickets saw Slab eventually bowled out for 159 with Wicks and Rainbird taking 2 wickets each.
Shane Gates, fresh from a century in his last outing, was then dismissed first ball and 3 more quick wickets saw the Sharks in early trouble at 4-42. This soon became 6-85 before Adam Clydesdale join Rainbird and they added 40 before Rainbird was out for a fine 37. The game was evenly poised with the Sharks 7 down and needing 35 runs when Sam Kelly joined Clydesdale. They quickly knocked off the runs with Clydesdale finishing unbeaten with an excellent 38 scored under enormous pressure.
