Luke Barlow began at Blackmans Bay as a skinny 17 year old in 1997/98, playing the majority of his season in the B grade side. Shuffling around the batting order, Luke found his feet the following season, bringing up three centuries in B grade and consistently taking wickets with the ball. At that season’s end Luke had cleaned up all the awards, winning the club B grade batting average, bowling average and best & fairest and adding the Association B grade batting average to the swag as well. Since then Luke has become a stalwart of the A grade side and is now recognised as one of the most experienced cricketers in the Sharks first XI, playing in numerous finals campaigns and two (unfortunately) losing Grand Finals in 99/00 and 05/06. Showing glimpses of his talent through the years, Luke has been known as a big hitting middle order batsmen who had been susceptible to an early rash shot. Over the past two seasons he has matured into a formidable opening bat in one day cricket, underlined by his single handed destruction of the Southern Tigers A grade side in plundering 171 runs (including 10 fours and 9 sixes) in 05/06. As a left arm fast medium bowler, Luke has proved many times that he has the capability to take big bags of wickets with the new or old ball. 2005/2006 represented a break through season for Luke, realising his full potential with bat and ball and encouraging him to play the 2006 season in England with Ashby Hastings Cricket Club.
Over the years Luke’s theories on playing cricket with a hangover, his sky blue terry toweling hat, falling down holes when intoxicated, breaking bones after making centuries and a nightclub strike rate comparable to his batting strike rate have become legend. One of his low lights occurred when he showed up to a game two hours late with a stinking hangover and was eventually allowed onto the field to take his position at long on. With the less than impressed captain bowling, Luke was keen to set things right, but within two minutes of being on the field a catch was sent in his direction………..which he dropped. After the game Luke suspended himself for a match!
